Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.

So many people seem to have not enjoyed this book, so I was a little wary going into it, but I’ve absolutely loved it. I don’t really like comparing to other books, but it’s one of the best ways of describing it so that others can determine whether they thing they will like it or not. This book is like a fantastic mix of The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Sin Eater’s Daughter.

However, it does also deserve to be recognised in it’s own right as a really good book full of twists and complicated characters. I feel like I really got to know all of these characters now, they are just so wonderfully written.

Mare is our protagonist. She is one of the Reds, a commoner, named after the colour of their blood. The Reds are ruled by the Silvers with silver-blood who possess their own powers, such as the ability to control fire, or water. However, Mare uncovers a powerful ability of her own and now she is thrust into the life of a Silver, to hide the fact that a Red possesses such power.

Cal and Maven are brothers and they are the princes of this kingdom. I don’t know about you, but from the beginning I easily started loving them both and as time went on we are turned against one of them. Despite being clearly told not to trust him, I could not help hoping that he would change. I hated the things he was doing, but he had also been there for Mare since the beginning.

However, don’t mistake this for a silly love triangle (I mean, there’s kind of a third guy too). Plus, these guys seem to often be sinking in and out of this “triangle”. It’s not your typical case of the girl getting to the end of the book and picking the one she truly loves. Red Queen is a story of betrayal and lies, of morals and what’s best for the kingdom.

Red Queen was a very enjoyable book and even if I put the book down, the world within it never left my mind, always urging me to pick it right back up. I definitely recommend it to those who enjoyed the previously mentioned books, young adults and lovers of fantasy. I rate this book 5/5 and very much look forward to picking up the sequel (however, it troubles me that the size of it is bigger than this book; I mean, that won’t look great on my book shelf…).
