It’s shocking that I have never actually shared my skincare routine on this blog considering how much I love skincare. I am always eager to share my favourite face masks and my favourite moisturisers, but I’ve never revealed everything. I feel quite lucky with my skin; sure it can get very dry and occasionally becomes very sensitive and while I do have breakouts, they are often few and far between. As a whole, I suppose I have good skin and as a result my skincare routine isn’t a very long one.
Before we delve into the products I use etc. I do want to point out that for this post I have been working with Dollar Shave Club*, a razor blades company, in order to raise awareness to the importance of changing your skincare routine every so often, namely as the seasons change as our skin changes also. As a result, for this post I am not only going to show you one of my skincare routines, but two of them for different points in the year.
My Summer Skincare Routine:
During the summer the first thing I do skin-wise when I wake up in the morning is wipe a face wipe over my face. At the moment I am really loving the Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes because I find them refreshing in the mornings and they make my skin slightly wet in preparation for my Simple Kind to Skin Vital Vitamin Day Cream as it allows my moisturiser to soak in quicker ready to apply my makeup. I love these products for the summer because they are light and refreshing, plus the day cream has SPF 15 and offers protection from UVA and UVB rays.
In the evenings I remove my makeup with my Simple Kind to Eyes Eye Makeup Remover although I don’t use this strictly for eyes, I used it everywhere. I like this being it is good at removing waterproof mascara which I tend to wear more of in the summer and it is pretty good at getting it all off. Next I wash my face with the Neutrogena – finally a different brand, ha! – Visibly Clear Spot Stress Control Daily Scrub to remove any remnants of makeup. I really love this face wash at the moment because it smells of cucumber and I have definitely noticed a reduced frequency of spots on my face since I started using it.
After patting my face dry I next use a face mask. I have been trying a lot of face masks lately (reviews here) and I reckon the best ones to use in the summer are LUSH‘s Cupcake and Brazened Honey Fresh Face Masks. Naturally, our skin tends to be more oily in the summer months, therefore Cupcake is a brilliant face mask to use because it’s perfect for removing excess oil from your skin without drying it out. Meanwhile, Brazened Honey is great for exfoliating and leaving your skin feeling incredibly soft and refreshed.
On summer nights I use a different moisturiser on my face as I prefer to opt for something thicker at night. This enables my skin to stay hydrated, especially after a day in the sun, therefore it cares for any slight burning, or if it’s too late for that, any peeling. So the moisturiser I like to use is the Simple Kind to Skin Vital Vitamin Night Cream. Also, after a day in the sun, not only is it important to keep your face moisturised, but your body too. This summer I’ve been enjoying the Soap and Glory Orangeasm Body Butter as the fruity scent makes it perfect for summer use. However, in desperate circumstances where I am sunburnt, I go for an aftersun, the one I usually go for being Garnier Ambre Solaire After Sun which is available as a body lotion or as a spray.
My Winter Skincare Routine:
Throughout the winter my skin can become awfully dry and unfortunately, my Simple day and night creams are just not good enough. Firm favourites of mine during these colder months are the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask, Moisturiser and Eye Cream.
The formula to all of these products is gel-like which means it’s really thin, but really effective at keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the bitter cold. In fact, the overnight mask can also be used over or under makeup! In the winter I always use all of these products in the evening, but I also use the moisturiser in the morning. If I notice my skin looking really dry throughout the day though, I’ll use a tiny bit of the overnight mask over the top of my makeup to prevent my skin from getting too bad and dehydrated.
Another part of my skincare routine that changes in the winter are the face masks I prefer to use. While Cupcake and Brazened Honey aren’t necessarily bad to use in the winter, there is another LUSH face mask I would much prefer to use. My favourite is LUSH Oatifix because it is incredibly moisturising and nourishing, smells delicious and is really effective (I have a full review here).
As you can see, my skin tends to go from one skin type to another throughout the year. While as a whole it is dry, it is noticeably drier in the winter and can go to being normal/oily throughout the summer. It is important to recognise how your skin differs throughout the year so that you can care for it accordingly, taking extra care when spending time in harsh weather conditions.
What are your favourite products to use in the summer and winter?
Do you have any tips for caring for your skin in the sun, or in the cold?
