Review: Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard.

You know when you finish a book you really enjoyed and you just have no thoughts? It’s like you’re frozen in place watching that final scene in the book and you don’t know how to move on from it. That’s how I feel right now. I don’t know what to say, where to start, my thoughts are a jumbled mess and I don’t know which string of thoughts to pick out as they’re floating away too fast and I’m still trying to process everything that happened. However at the same time, it’s as if my brain is empty because the thoughts are fleeing so fast. Does that make any sense? Probably not.

I feel that the best way to start is with your typical spoiler-free overview, right? Well, Glass Sword is the sequel to Red Queen and if you have yet to read that what on earth are you doing here? But, if you have read that I do have a review of Red Queen right here.

So, this book picks up where Red Queen left off. Mare and Cal are on the run, along with the rest of the Scarlet Guard. Maven is left angry and is trying to hunt down them both, meanwhile they are searching for other newbloods before Maven can get his hands on them… (I don’t know what more to say without potential spoilers leaking through.)

I apologise if this review feels jumpy, or even a bit aggressive. I don’t know about you, but after reading this book I feel like all of my emotions are like, heightened. I feel more emotional and I feel strangely argumentative from all the arguing that took place when they left the prison. I fear that this review isn’t really going to flow, but I want to get across an accurate portrayal of my feelings after reading this book at the same time.

I love all these characters. I said it in my review of Red Queen and I’ll say it again; they are all just so well written. I may not like them all, but they all have their own personalities and views and Aveyard makes them all unique and creatively comes up with all of these new and different abilities for all the newbloods we encounter.

I reckon not a lot of people would have liked Mare in this book due to her behaviour, but she’s trying and sure she’s not perfect, but who is? She’s trying to do what’s best. If she cares too much about everyone she’ll just end up hurt and disappointed, so while she may look harsh and cruel at times, she knows that it’s what they need to get the job done. I also love that between these horrible scenes we do get to see softer version of her too and even the softer version of Cal (I loved the scene with the little boy, the Carpenter’s son).

We don’t see much of Maven in this book until the end  and a little bit in the middle and I was perfectly fine with that as I am not a fan of him at all any more. Parts of the book that mention him earlier on frustrated me as I don’t want Mare to care for him, even if it’s the person he was before. I love Mare and Cal; however at the same time I’m not sure of them. I also feel that there is more about Maven to be revealed in the next book as at the end of Red Queen we learnt about how he betrayed Mare, but there was still a flicker of humanity that remained when Thomas was mentioned, so it suggests that there is more to his character to be unlocked in the next book.

I really cannot wait until book three and it’s going to be such a long wait! I really enjoyed this book, probably not at much as Red Queen, but nonetheless, I still loved it and rate it 5/5.

WHY?!

Shade. Wow. It all happened so fast and I felt like a spear went through my heart, just as it did his. It happened so fast that I had to read it again as I didn’t realise what had happened. I didn’t cry at all in Red Queen, not when Maven betrayed them, but Shade’s death killed me. And then Mare going to see her family. And then the funeral. I can’t believe I was affected so much. However, I am actually a little glad there is a wait for the next book as it means I can grieve a bit! How did you react to Shade’s death?
